From Laboratories to Classrooms: Merging Conceptual and Methodological Approaches between Science and Technology Studies and History of Education

Abstract

By featuring 15 presentations as well as a keynote lecture over the course of a two-day event, the conference serves as a forum that brings history of education in conversation with science and technology studies (STS). This endeavor picks up on recent developments in history of education research, which have taken up novel (re-)considerations of the material turn by engaging with networks, actors, and technologies. To allow for in-depth discussions, each presentation will engage with the conference topic from a particular vantage point, thus contributing to a broad and complex interaction between education research and STS approaches. The presentations will be flanked by comments from five discussants, who represent experts at the junctures of STS and history of education perspectives. Their expertise will provide methodological insights as well as conceptual groundings to spark the intended cross-disciplinary dialogue and tease out its implications and consequences for the specific research projects presented at the conference and for history of education research more generally. In a concluding round table discussion, the experts will discuss methodological and conceptual conclusions and present further possibilities for research projects and collaboration.
