The German Federal Ministry of Finance and the Global Steering of the Economy, 1955-1975
Abstract
In the post-war period, economic ideas became popular that no longer viewed economic policy problems as isolated sub-issues, but as a coherent and controllable whole. The state was assigned the role of contributing to the stabilisation of central macroeconomic variables through active economic policy-making. The aim of the PhD-project is to investigate the definition, decision-making and institutionalisation processes in the implementation of the associated political instruments between 1955 and 1975. The German Globalsteuerung (“global steering”) will be the focus of the analysis, and in particular the work of the Federal Ministry of Finance. In order to categorise and differentiate the analysis, however, it will regularly refer to historical comparison with France and Italy. The PhD is part of a project on the history of financial policy in the Federal Republic of Germany from 1949 to 1990, which was commissioned by the Federal Ministry of Finance.
