Failing boys? – Additional analyses of the IQB Trends in Student Achievement 2012 and 2018

The study IQB Trend in Student Achievement 2018 revealed negative trends for student achievement and motivation in mathematics from 2012 to 2018 which were specifically strong for boys. These developments raise the question whether boys in Germany are disadvantaged not only in educational participation and certificate acquisition but also in competence acquisition and motivational development. Based on data from the studies IQB Trend in Student Achievement 2012 and 2018, the research project contributes to a better understanding of these negative trends. The research project investigates whether boys’ achievement and motivation decreased especially in specific contexts or for specific student groups. In particular, the research project investigates the trends in boys’ mathematical achievement, academic self-concept and interest for the following contextual and individual characteristics: groups of federal states, school type, teachers’ sex and the gender connotation of the subject, students’ social background and migration background.
