Forschungsvorhaben:
While there is an emergent body of literature dealing with the new movement of volunteers for refugees, little attention is paid to the spatial practices of care and solidarity among refugees. This research aims to explore how refugees through their everyday spatial practices build relations of care and places of solidarity that contribute to the development of new modes of “conviviality”.
Scholars of Migration have repeatedly shown how migration, particularly forced migration and displacement, is a highly gendered process. Migration is a transformative spatial experience for most people and all subjectivity is gendered, thus this research also examines how the processes of “becoming a refugee” challenge and affect the masculinities of refugee men. Refugees are not just the “victims” of border policing, restrictive migration policies and hostile local populations, but also as social and political agents, they engage in networks of solidarity with each other and with local activists and re-construct their identities as refugee men. Such everyday embodied experiences of non-hegemonial masculinities might establish new ways of belonging and care that could provide us with different tools to rethink the current policies of “integration” that govern migrant bodies.
The research will be based on a comparative fieldwork in Germany (Berlin) and Greece (Athens/Mytilini). Both countries differ not only in terms of socio-cultural, economic, legal and institutional contexts, but they also symbolise different stages of the migration journey for most refugees. Comparative work that takes refugee journeys in Europe into consideration will show how such different socio-political environments affect the ways refugee men establish networks of solidarity and care.
