Health, Medicine and Modernity among Tibetans and in Globalized Tibetan Medicine (Veranstaltung: 27.08.-02.09.06, Königswinter)

Projektbeschreibung

This panel explores the intersection of health practices and paradigms, medical systems, and experiences of modernity among Tibetans, and between Tibetans and non-Tibetan interlocutors. The papers on this panel raise issues about the meanings and definitions of 'public health' in the Tibetan context, and address state and non-governmental health (and health-related development) interventions among Tibetan communities. Issues of medical production and commoditization as well as education and clinical practice are also discussed, particularly as they relate to the interactions between gso ba rig pa and biomedicine at the level of epistemology, politics, socio-economics, and culture. While most papers on this panel address these issues from within Tibetan communities in the PRC and Tibetan border regions such as northern Nepal, several papers focus on encounters between Tibetan medicine and western practitioners and patients.
