Interaction of mammalian seminal plasma proteins with membranes IV


Fn-type II proteins, cystein-rich secretory proteins (CRISP) and CUB-type proteins (spermadhesins) are secretory products of the male genital tract. During the post-testicular maturation and after ejaculation these seminal plasma proteins interact with the surface of the sperm cell. By that sperm cells acquire the ability for fertilization. E.g. these proteins are involved in the processes of capacitation, sperm-egg recognition and sperm-egg fusion. In order to excert their physiological role, the proteins has to bind and to interact to/with the plasma membrane of the sperm cell. However, the molecular mechanisms of this interaction and the functional role of seminal plasma proteins is unknown. The present project will characterise the interaction of seminal plasma proteins with lipids/membranes by investigating the impact of the proteins on the structure and function of membranes.
