BONDS. Guilt, debt and other obligations.
Debt seems to have become a permanent issue in public debate: Economics and politics are handling incredible figures which are linked to the allocation of debt that is hardly transparent. Experts from numerous disciplines comment the situation more or less convincingly and are trying to find reasons and solutions to the complex situation. Figures, words and emotions are entangled to form a picture that is complex and difficult to analyse A multi-disciplinary international conference in the House of Cultures of the World in Berlin (Haus der Kulturen der Welt Berlin) will invite numerous personalities to discuss and clarify political, economic, cultural and artistic aspects around this subject. The underlying assumption suggests that the current monetary debt and the adjacent debates and emotions are closely linked with experiences and dimensions of guilt: particularly with evidence of existential and genealogical bonds as well as perceptions of ethical and moral and legal obligations. Even etymology brings together aspects of „duty“ (Sollen), of power, law and economics. The history of sacrifice opens up processes of guilt transformation to be found in current debates in anthropology, theology, philosophy, psychology, neurosciences, law, economics, finance, literature and semiotics. These many aspects of debt and guilt in the cultural, social and political fields will be put forward and contribute to the emergence of constructive approaches to the current uncomfortable situation and stress the emphasis on the „bond“ aspect.
Debt is not (only) about money or the lack of it, but about the human condition per se, as for example: who owns time and space and who owns life? Who decides about work, consciousness, justice, trust, hierarchies and other obligations? And on the other side: How and why do distrust and harm occur?
The dimensions of the system of debt and guilt (Schuld-en), of trust and the necessity to forgive and to cancel debts will be made transparent and contribute to necessary processes of debt transformation. The conference is planned as a series of speeches as well as discussions and panels. The publication of the conference papers and a white book of questions and possible answers and steps will document the event and contribute to the creation of a transnational and multi-disciplinary network on bonds, debt and guilt. Particular importance is attached to the cooperation of academia, economy, culture and art. The conference will also be attended by: 1 Cartography of the Giving, the Taking and the Valuating“: Debits and credits between nations, institutions, generations and artefacts (of the financial system) will be made transparent by drawing a complex bond-map using the example of Greece and the Euro. 2 A series of systemic constellations by renowned therapists will enable the experience of debt and guilt in various fields as the etymological, philosophical, theological, psychological, legal and economic and support the development of constructive approaches. 3 The widely discuted play „Economics of Good and Evil: The Quest for Economic Meaning from Gilgamesh to Wall Street“ by Tomas Sedlacek wil be performed in the House of Cultures.
