Impact of climate and socio-economic factors on dengue epidemics in Sri Lanka


The incidence and spread of dengue is associated with different factors related to each other such as climate change, socio-economic conditions, socio-cultural practices, and environmental factors. To integrate these different aspects and acquire a holistic picture, Geographical Information System (GIS) and Remote sensing technology are valuable tools which enables to link and update information between the different factors and the reported number of dengue incidents with their breeding locations. Our goal is to develop a tool to differentiate risk areas of vector breeding, by identification of the social and environmental factors. This will enable the creation of a Dengue Risk Map (DRM) for decision makers to respond, strategize and create preventive action plans to control the transmission of dengue. The present situation of dengue incidents will be compared with past records of dengue patients with the respective climate, environmental and socio-economic conditions in the affected areas.
