Music as Event in Films

This research project is dedicated to film scenes in which music has the status of an event, i.e. diegetic music that fulfils important dramaturgical functions. This includes dramatic turning points, moments of crisis, inspiration, conflict, competetition, artistic triumph or failure and so forth. The crucial element is music not as an illustrative device reinforcing the drama but rather music as part of the drama itself. As a comparative study, the project attempts to explain the functions of musical events in motion pictures in the light of recent philosophical, performance and film studies.
