Giant Macromolecules


This cooperative program aims at enabling cross-disciplinary research on giant conjugated macrocycles combined with nanographenes between chemistry, material science, and physics. The overall objective of this project is to establish relationships between molecular structures and nanoelectronic properties of single giant conjugated macrocycles, as well as supramolecular nanostructures thereof in solution, on surfaces and at interfaces.
On the basis of our preliminary research works in Japan and Germany, we planned the following cooperative research projects.
(1) Synthesis of novel giant conjugated macrocycle molecules, which allow for the inclusion/complexation with nanographenes, and the formation of supramolecular nanotubes by stacking the macrocycles.
(2) Assembly of ordered mono- and bilayers of conjugated macrocycles and nanographenes at surface and interfaces.
(3) Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and spectroscopy (STS) study of supramolecular nanostructures of giant conjugated macrocycles and nanographenes at surfaces and interfaces.
(4) Scanning force microscopy (SFM) and scanning near-field optical microscopy (SNOM) studies of macrocycles in supramolecular nanotubes with and without nanographene inclusions.
