Open pit mine planning via a continuous optimization approach

Subject of the investigation are optimization problems to schedule the excavation of open pits with or without capacity constraints. Since the existence of solutions for these problems has already been shown, the main task is to characterize the solutions by local optimality conditions and to design algorithms for their numerical approxiamtion. the project will be pursued in close collaboration with colleagues from the Center for Mathematical Modelling in Santiago de Chile.
