BERLIN SCIENCE COMMUNICATION AWARD: Journalist-in-Residency-Programme
Abstract
Against the backdrop of increasingly global competition, including in science communication, many Berlin scientific institutions have come together to strengthen the international marketing of the Berlin science location. For this purpose, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU) together with Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin), the Charité and Einstein Stiftung Berlin (ESB), with the support of Wissenschaft im Dialog and Berlin Partner für Wirtschaft und Technologie GmbH, have developed the Journalist-in-Residence programme The concept has three aims: Firstly, the programme will sustainably increase the international visibility of Berlin as an excellent location for science and research. Secondly, the associated infrastructure measures will increase awareness of the importance of international research marketing processes within the individual Berlin institutions. Thirdly, the actions will contribute to the professionalisation and internationalisation of science journalism through intensive dialogue between international experts and the Berlin science location – both in theory and in practice. In autumn 2017, six talented young journalists from North and South America and Asia, three focus regions in which HU has particularly developed its international network in a strategic manner, will be invited to Berlin, to be given the ideal framework conditions for two months to get to know the Berlin science location, to bring and find impetus and to establish contacts. The aim is that they then report the impressions that they have gained to the audience in their home country from their own perspective, with the focus on their journalistic freedom. As an introduction, the partners in Berlin offer the fellows a tailor-made week-long programme directly after their arrival with access to the structures and contacts at the institutions. During the fellows’ stay, they will have the opportunity to immerse themselves intensively in the Berlin science community and are invited to accompany scientists from every field and career level, e.g. from the Clusters of Excellence, the Graduate Schools or the Einstein Visiting Fellows. It is intended that they develop innovative online and offline formats with the cooperation partners, which take into account the cultural specifics of their home region. At the end, a one-day or two-day conference on Science communication in an international dialogue (working title) provides the fellows with a platform to present the results of their time in Berlin. After their stay, the fellows have the possibility of realising a follow-up event with scientists, science journalists and managers in their home region, allowing them to build another bridge to their own network. With this programme, HU and its partners wish to set the course for the future of internationally oriented science communication, and to thereby position Berlin as a global pulse generator and science location.
