HU Institutional Strategy: The Rise and Fall of Writing the Self. A Chapter in the Historical Anthropology of Western Individualism (Funding Line Creating Opportunities)

The book project is designed to reconstruct the development of so called “life writings” in English culture. These writings range from all sorts of personal accounts, diaries, memoirs and autobiographies to the field of biographical studies. Based on a broad selection of early sources from libraries in Oxford, Cambridge and London, Jürgen Schlaeger examines the expanding enunciations of the self from the late Middle Ages to the 21st century. The ultimate goal of the study is to lay the basis for a re-examination of the validity of an ‘individualization postulate’ as an indispensible, maybe even anthropological element of all modernization processes.
