HU Institutional Strategy: re: work. Art and Reproduction (Funding Line Creating Opportunities)

Based on current debates about the relationship of art to work the project “re: work. Art and Reproduction” – designed in cooperation with Jenny Nachtigall (UCL) – devotes itself to an area, which has – with the current focus on production and productivity – been widely disregarded so far. This is the non-productive part of reproduction, which ensures security and maintenance of production capacity and -assets. Art plays a central role here, since it’s traditional and non-productive and therefore comparable to reproduction. There have been attempts to interpret it as work from the early 20th century until today. The project wants to intervene in the current debates and aims at investigating the question to which extent the theory and praxis of art as work corresponds with the crisis of economic and social reproduction, and which role media plays in it. Seminar, workshop and conference shall lay the foundation for an international network, which consolidates cooperation between the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin, the University College London and Princeton University.
