Non-textual marking systems in Ancient Egypt

The designed project aims at initiating a long-term cooperation between Egyptologists from the University of Warsaw and Humboldt University at Berlin and focusses on non-textual marking systems (NTMS) in Ancient Egypt and adjacent areas. The joint group comprises young as well as established researchers of both institutes. The main focus will be on the usage and function of (1) person marks, (2) pot marks, (3) masons' marks, and (4) the relationships between NTMS and writing. Sign corpora will be collected and a database will be designed as a basis for future research in a broader diachronic and diatopic context. To achieve this, working groups will meet to discuss the problems, and two conferences are planned for the exchange of results which are intended for a joint publication. Cooperation, mutual visits, and inclusion of young researchers as well as student research assistants will provide a solid basis for sustainable connections beyond the time span of funding.
