Prof. Dr. Beate Binder

Beate Binder is Professor of European Ethnology and Gender Studies at the Institute of European Ethnology and the Center for Transdisciplinary Gender Studies at HU since 2008. Her research focuses on the anthropology of policy, law, and morality, as well as feminist cultural anthropology. She studied Empirical Cultural Studies and History with a focus on Eastern Europe in Tübingen and received her PhD with a thesis on electrification (Elektrifizierung als Vision: Zur Symbolgeschichte einer Technik, TVV: Tübingen 1999). Her habilitation "Streitfall Stadtmitte: Der Berliner Schlossplatz" (Böhlau: Cologne 2009) examines the link between historical politics and urban planning. From 1990-1995 Beate Binder was a research assistant at the Department of Design at the HdK Berlin, then worked on various research projects, and from 2006-2008 she was a professor of folklore studies/cultural anthropology at the University of Hamburg.
