Prof. Dr. Michael Borgolte


Michael Borgolte (* 1948) doctorate from Münster (1975) and habilitation from Freiburg (1981). A former Heisenberg fellow of the DFG, he has taught in Basel, Bamberg, and Frankfurt, among other places. He became professor for medieval history at HU Berlin in 1991 where he founded the “Institute for Comparative History of Europe in the Middle Ages” (1998). Member of the Advisory Board at the German Historical Institute Washington, DC (2000–13). Dean of the Faculty of Arts I (2006–08). Speaker of the DFG-PP “Integration and Disintegration of Civilizations in the European Middle Ages” (2005–12). Full member of the Monumenta Germaniae Historica (2003–19), the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities (since 2005), and the Academia Europea (since 2013). ERC Advanced Grant for “Foundation in Medieval Societies. Cross-Cultural Comparisons” (2012–17). Senior Researcher at HU and founding director of the “Berlin Institute for Islamic Theology” (until 2021). Humboldt Medal (2021).
