Das sozialistische Konzept eines Stadtzentrums, Sofia (1944-1989): Zwischen politischer und ideologischer Ideologie und gesellschaftlicher Praxis

The research explores the socialist conception of a city center through the case-study of Sofia. The research is focused on the urban development of Sofia and its impact upon everyday social life. The research explores how the ideologically inspired construction of the city (the projected city as shaped from above) and the daily reappropriation of city space through its active usage (the inhabited city as reshaped from below) are dynamically producing the city space. In doing so, it traces urban and social changes within two places with quite different functions and therefore, developments the commercial center and the main political square as architectonic embodiments of political imagery, on the one hand, and as codified frameworks of social behavior in public, on the other. The underlying hypothesis that social use of those central topoi was stage-directed in accord with an essentially socialist concept of public praxis is tested through their analytical contrasting to typologically identical places under the previous political rule (the time of nation-state building starting in 1878 with the emancipation of Bulgaria from the Ottoman Empire).
