A Cultural History of Germany, 1918 -1936

The aim of the project is to develop a new perspective on the German history of the interwar years that synthesizes the findings of the new political approach to cultural history. Culture is to be understood - in the sense of an ethnographic or anthropological approach - as the totality of ideals and symbols that are guiding human actions and human life. Topics will be: Space - time - orders in times of crises - Lebenswelten - knowledge - body - rupture of civilization. The caesura of 1933 will be maintained as a political one but "suspended" with regard to the cultural dimension.
